== Misconceptions ==

The main misconception is conflating pedophilic disorder and [[pedophilia]]. This is done by Wikipedia, which states that "Pedophilia is termed pedophilic disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11)."<ref>[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedophilia Pedophilia], Wikipedia.</ref>. This leads to many people assuming that the attraction itself is a mental illness. Conceptualizing the attraction as pathological results in wide promotion of conversion therapy and an erroneous belief that any map who considers mapness an inherent identity is uneducated and mislead. 

People who understand the nature of this disorder poorly often claim that distress and guilt about being a map is a symptom of [[CSA obsessive-compulsive disorder|POCD]], and that "clients who have pedophilic disorder enjoy and are aroused by sexualized thoughts and images of children, clients with P-OCD fear that they may actually enjoy or find pleasure in these images"<ref>[https://www.ocdtypes.com/pocd-ocd.php Pedophilic OCD], OCD Types, New England OCD Institute.</ref>. 

In addition to that, [[Mapmisia|mapmisiacs]] often use ableist stereotypes against maps, such as assuming poor self control, low self awareness, violent behavior.

== Criticism ==

Both DSM and ICD treat the act of sexual abuse, perpetrated by a pedophile, as a sign of a mental disorder, while no conclusion like this is made about non-pedophilic sexual abusers. 

The distressed feelings maps experience about their attraction can be rather well explained by the minority stress model, which describes internalized stigma and guilt members of hated minorities may develop.

Girllove is an attraction towards significantly younger children or adolescents who are girls. People who find this attraction personally important to their identity may call themselves girllovers.

Girllove does not need to be exclusive or preferential, girllovers may also be attracted to boys and non-binary children, as well as women, men, and non-binary adults. Their own gender may also vary. A girllover may have other identities, such as boylover or childlover. Girllovers who are attracted to particularly young girls may call themselves little girl lovers, commonly abbreviated as LGL.

There isn't much known about women in MAP activism due to decades of erasure, but the bits of information that we do have indicate that many MAP women are GLs.

It is about erotic and sexual relationships between women and young girls and boys. It includes interviews and discusses the historic, psychological and sociological aspects of women-child relationships. The ISBN number of the book is 90-6012-885-0. The English version, "Special Women's Issue" of Paidika, includes almost the same articles as this book.

Another good, but also sad, Dutch book about female childlove is "Daar sta je dan... alleen!" (1984), by Danielle Vandenbosch. It is the diary of a sixteen year old girl, describing her discovery of her special feelings for and relations with young girls. Queerness and mapness as identities have many common roots. Terms such as [[pedophilia]] and [[ephebophilia]] appeared in psychiatric literature due to studies of male homosexuality. It is possible to say that map activism started with NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association), a pro contact movement that united queer maps. One of the oldest map symbols, the [[boylove logo]], was designed by two queer men who took inspiration from the gay liberation pink triangle. As LGBTQ gained more mainstream acceptance, its peer/adult attracted members turned away from maps. Association with a more stigmatized group became a risk factor, and PAA queer people (frequent victims of misdirected [[mapmisia]]) started vocally denouncing maps, in hopes to raise their own social status.

Nowadays queer identities of maps are frequently erased. Non-map queer people employ the following logistics to justify this erasure:
*Maps are not actually attracted to children, pedophilia is an act of child sexual abuse, not a sexual/romantic preference, therefore maps cannot have queer attractions;
*Maps cannot be asexual, because romantic attraction to children doesn’t exist; maps cannot be aromantic, because aromanticism is "the norm";
*Maps who claim to be trans are actually cis people that lie about their identity to get away with bad behavior.

Multiple cases of doxxing, outing, and abuse of maps, especially teenage maps, were connected to queer friend groups. PAA queer people also occasionally falsely accuse each other of being maps, this is one of frequent themes of [[shipping discourse]].
