Map Emoji of the Month was an ironic trend among Twitter maps in 2019-2020. It consisted of collectively choosing an emoji by vote and adding it to display names for a month.

Background

This trend was caused by spite. Antis would periodically make claims that maps use a specific emoji to identify each other - most commonly pear (๐Ÿ)[1], which is actually used by sex workers and porn artists[2], and clown face (๐Ÿคก)[3]. Inaccuracy of these claims prompted several map Twitter bloggers to play into it in an absurd fashion. This trend was started by an account MonthlyMAPEmoji in October 2019 and after this account's suspension between late December and January largely organized by Grumpy.
